History of Religion

The Scribbler was so struck by this observation by Terry Johnson she read to me today:

The whole history of religion is a history of idolatry: God conceived of falsely and worshipped wrongly. It does not encourage us to think highly of our ability to get things right.
Hopefully she'll comment a little on it--and not just because she really needs to post something--I find it quite profound

Surely the word 'whole' does not imply every moment in the history of religion, otherwise we wouldnt know what is real worship, and which is idolatry. Or am I missing the distinction between the use of the word 'religion' as opposed to that of 'theology'?

Religion is idolary as a whole. God certainly didn't create it, man did.
It certainly does not encourage us to think of ourselves highly at all. Remember the Pope, having been dead for a few days carried throughout so people may see him? What's more, his clothing probably cost more than some people's homes. It was a wrecthed display of religion, and could encapsulate this subject well.
I thought we learned how and in what manner to worship God through His Holy Word. Religion doesn't, and shouldn't teach us that. If anything, I'd say "religion" as a whole does more to move people away from the truth of God's Word than steer them toward it.
Just my thoughts. Excellent observation Scribbler, thanks for posting!
